Commercial Solar Carport Solutions By Sun Action Trackers

Commercial Solar Carport Solutions By Sun Action Trackers

As the adoption of solar technologies become more widely accepted, many developers and EPC’s are finding new and innovative ways to integrate new projects into their solar portfolio.  One of the newest ideas is the construction of solar carports and solar canopies.  This new innovation has allowed for solar production in already existing applications as well as providing tremendous opportunity for future construction projects.  While a typical carport or canopy provides value in simple shading it is still a one-dimensional benefit that is missing a major opportunity.  This innovation partnered with lower prices industry wide is making solar carports and solar canopies a reality.

Commercial Opportunities for Solar Carports

Many commercial buildings have been built without the opportunity of solar in mind.  As of recently, a number of commercial rooftop projects have launched allowing companies to engage in renewable initiatives.  This has been achieved through various incentive programs, company culture initiatives and cost savings.  These projects however, represent a small percentage overall commercial solar projects due to a number of issues.

Issues With Rooftop Commercial Solar Arrays

Commercial structures often times have an extended lifespan but maintenance is required to maintain the facility.  Many structures are built with the intention that the roof will be used only to drain water from the structure and not with the idea of weight loads.  This means that a number of commercial buildings cannot support the weight of a solar array, with additional concerns arising about water flow to drain the roof properly.

Utilize Already Used Land For Solar

One of the major benefits of solar carports is the dual-use of already used land.  Parking lots are vast and large in space and provide a much more usable opportunity for solar than rooftop applications.  Land that is already being used can be better utilized and made more comfortable by its users by the use of solar carports.  The solar carports provide shade but will also provide electrical production to either cut costs or to provide power for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Incentives Using Solar Carports

Many States Are Already On Board

In the past 12 months a number of states in the U.S. have adopted and executed incentive programs specifically for solar carports.  Maryland currently has a grant program for commercial-scale solar carports and Massachusetts has recently added solar carports to the SMART Program (Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target).  There are also national tax credits up to 30% for installation of solar carports for some users (depending on business size, ownership status, minority owned businesses, women owned businesses, military veteran owned businesses).

The ITC And Commercial Solar Carports

The International Trade Commission rulings have been a hot topic in any manufacturing linked business, but there is fantastic news on the horizon in the case of commercial solar carports.  Not only can you get the 30% reduction in cost on the solar panels, but also the structural components, which in some cases will lower the cost below roof-mount systems.  The ITC tariffs also discount the installation of the ground-mounted solar carports which is not included on roof-mount systems.

A Market On The Rise

As the U.S. commercial solar carport market continues to grow, forecasts from even a year ago seem more than conservative.  What was forecast to be a 300 MW market 3 years ago is now over a 1 GW market in North America annually

Some predictions headed into the 2020’s predict that commercial solar carports could become one of the leading sources of solar power generation nationwide.

Bi-Facial Panels on Sun Action Trackers

Bi-Facial Panels on Sun Action Trackers

With a number of current innovations in panel manufacturing along with lowered costs in the marketplace, bi-facial panels are starting to become a viable option for further increased production in solar arrays.  Bi-facial panels are expected to grow into a double digit share of solar panel sales within the year and tracker companies are scrambling to modify designs to fit this new opportunity.  With an average increase of 12.5%, many tracker companies have had to redesign their offering to support bi-facial panels to compete with this upcoming trend.

“With the help of our partners at Mission Solar Energy, we have been testing our Dual Axis Solar Trackers and Single Axis Solar Trackers for years with bi-facial solar modules, and have seen production increases in line with industry standards, and even higher in some cases.”

-Pete Lipscomb, Director of Business Development.

The most interesting statistic that most are not thinking of however, is the difference between Dual Axis Solar Trackers and Single Axis Solar Trackers.  With an increase of up to 25% between the two, the addition of bi-facial panels will make an even more significant impact.

The PST-2AL Dual Axis Solar Tracker has produced gains of up to 50% compared to fixed tilt systems with using bi-facial solar panels.  If you would like to learn more about how our Dual Axis Solar Tracker can utilize bi-facial solar technology, please CONTACT US for more information.

Summer Heat Records Reach Pricing Maximum in Texas

The oppressive heat of a summer in Texas is hard to deny, but in that oppression lies great opportunity for solar production.  As the heat begins to rise, wind begins to slow making solar much more important to renewable initiatives across the state.

In the past two weeks, ERCOT has reported record breaking energy demands state wide matching the record breaking temperatures.  In the past week, they have set a new record peak energy demand of 5080 MW and with higher temperatures expected, that record could be easily broken as well.

This increased demand has driven prices up for solar energy to the maximum legal price statewide of $9.00/kWH (disregarding contractual Power Purchase Agreements) during midday peak pricing hours.

The rise in demand and pricing makes Texas a prime location for your solar project.  It is currently the 7th overall state of solar power installed, while it is the 4th largest market in 2017.  Texas also touts a heavily upgraded transmission system throughout the state.

Sun Action Trackers is proud to have installed over 400mW of Dual Axis Trackers which adds up to over 30,000 trackers statewide.  As demands peak, our Dual Axis Trackers are increasing production up to 40% through our patented Real Time Sensing, adding additional value to each of our projects in Texas.

If you would like to learn more about our Dual Axis Solar Trackers or our projects in Texas, please CONTACT US for more information.

ITC Steel Tariffs : How are they affecting your project?

ITC Steel Tariffs : How are they affecting your project?

Steel Tariffs Introduced in March for Solar Industry

As many of us know, March of 2018 was a volatile month for the solar industry, as steel tariffs up to 25% were imposed on manufacturers and steel importers to the United States.  In January, the International Trade Commission acting on orders from the President imposed an import tax or tariff on various products including solar panels, which immediately caused a number of utility scale projects to be halted until financial profitability could be once again guaranteed.  As a result of the steel tariffs imposed in March, a number of these utility scale projects are once again put on hold, while companies scramble to make projects profitable once again.

Quality Materials Reign in Utility Scale Solar

On March 22, 2018 the White House announced that it would offer exceptions to the tariffs to Mexico, Canada, The European Union, Australia, Brazil, Argentina and South Korea.  It is said that these exceptions were made due to political/trade relations and QUALITY OF MATERIALS PROVIDED.  As you can imagine, many utility scale solar manufacturers have not only had to completely adapt their supply chain, but also have lost a number of projects because of the use of inferior materials.  Though the tariffs are impacting almost every manufacturer in the US, there are some bright spots to be found.

Where Does the Steel Come From In Your Solar Project?

Sun Action Trackers is one of the only Solar Manufacturers globally that sources our steel from South Korea.  Our Magnesium Alloy Coated (MAC) Steel is sourced from POSCO and is in many ways a highly superior product.  Through UL testing and certification, we are able to prove our products resistance to harsh environments and its self healing capabilities.

We at Sun Action Trackers were pleased to learn of the steel tariff exemption allowed for South Korea.  This exemption allows us to continue to offer POSCO’s superior steel products at an even more competitive price.

-Pete Lipscomb, Director of Business Development

This could mean a possible advantage for your projects by installing a better material at a lower cost than other imported options.  If you would like to learn more about how Sun Action Trackers can help your project get back on track, or to learn more about our Dual Axis or Single Axis Solar Trackers, please feel free to CONTACT US for more information.

As foreign investment continues to power San Antonio’s production of solar energy, more and more local hands are building the pieces that produce the power itself.

At the recent opening of CPS Energy’s latest solar farm, Alamo 3, utility officials pointed out that the 70-acre farm near Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 is the area’s first to be built almost entirely with locally-produced parts.

Raiford Smith, vice-president of corporate development and planning for CPS, said San Antonio has attracted wholesale investment — and with it, a full-scale energy supply chain — with an all-in approach to solar power. CPS has made a major push toward having 20 percent of its generation capacity come from renewable energy sources as part of the city’s 2020 initiative. Read more

‘Steel forest’ in Uvalde to bring solar power to San Antonio

‘Steel forest’ in Uvalde to bring solar power to San Antonio

'Steel forest' in Uvalde to bring solar power to San Antonio

Via Scott Wudel, CPS Energy Newsroom

Out in Uvalde, a new forest is rising from the ground. How can a forest come to life and flourish in South Texas? When it’s made of silicon and steel.

The forest is actually a solar farm. It’s more of a ranch, really – it covers roughly 900 acres. Like other solar farms around the area, it’s designed to bring more renewable power to CPS Energy customers. The new farm will generate 95 megawatts (MW) of sun power – twice as much as any current farm now delivering power to greater San Antonio. It will be the largest solar farm in Texas.

OCI Solar Power, developer of four of the eight farms currently generating power for San Antonio, is continuing its commitment to provide 400 megawatts of solar to CPS Energy. These four farms are now producing 90 MW of clean power – with the largest producing 41 MW. The Uvalde farm, deemed “Alamo 5,” will eclipse the first four combined and will be complete later this year. Two more farms are on the way by 2017.

Roughly half of the Alamo 5 farm was built over the last eight months, despite the challenges of rocks, rain and rattlesnakes. Large steel assemblies, known in industry terms as “trackers” and manufactured by San Antonio-based Sun Action Trackers, line much of the acreage like steel tree trunks. Every day, more take root in the rocky terrain. In the end, there will be 9,000 of these steel trees, each holding a canopy of 42 silicon solar panels. Many of these panels were produced in San Antonio at the new Mission Solar Energy manufacturing facility.

Each tracker uses advanced technology – sensors to help the canopy of panels follow the sun’s arc both up and down and side to side, allowing the panels to generate more energy than fixed panels which only move in one direction. Inverters located across the site, made by KACO new energy, another New Energy Economy partner, convert incoming direct current, or DC, power from the panels to the alternating, or AC, power that customers use in their homes and businesses. When the farm is complete, a mind-boggling 378,000 panels will collect and convert sunlight into electricity. The 95-MW farm is expected to generate enough power for 17,000 homes. Read more
